A few questions for you 5.0 guys, all in reference to the 5.0...
-Stock for stock, or lightly modified/tuned: Which is faster, auto or manual(with an average driver)? -If the auto is slower, is it by a large margin? -Any weak points to the auto? -Is the MT82 still having issues? I've been talking to a dealership for a week now. Trying to locate a '12 5.0/Auto. They have a premium Kona Blue 5.0/M6, 3:31 sitting on the lot that I could probably get down to a good price, but being at the drag strip has got me wanting an auto bad...

I haven't heard about any weak points on the auto, except that the stock tune does not shift at redline, which also makes me question the fastest "stock" auto 5.0 being the fastest. MT82 issues are few and far between. I, personally, had my pressure plate bolts back out at 900 miles, and 15,000 miles later, and about 20 passes at the track, it is still running like a champ. Only time will tell. Now a question for you...you have a 12 Camaro SS, why the hell you looking at jumping into a 12 Mustang? Just wondering. If I was in your shoes, unless it was a second car, I definitely wouldn't do it.

No real weak points for the auto. It is worth replacing the clutches in it if you are going to build an 8 sec. car but they have been very bullet-proof to date with stock internals. Once you get the right transmission calibration in the tune, they are just monsters. My only complaint is the very low first gear. 4.17. It limits you some on what rear gear to run in the car. Stock they are setup with a 3.15. I moved to a 3.31 so 1st was still useable and cross the traps at the top of 3rd. On my manual trans car, I was running a 3.90 which is the optimal rear gear using a 28" tire. I never had any issues with my MT-82. It was very solid and withstood everything I could throw at it. My decision to move to the auto was mainly due to it's ability to run quicker/faster with fewer mods and less stress on the drivetrain. Hope that helps.

If you are on a quest for ET's, or you are just going to race a lot, then get the auto.
However, I'm a manual guy all the way. I love rowing my own gears, even in traffic. I've decided that I will never buy an auto as long as my back and knees allow me to drive a manual. Manuals are just too fun. But an auto is definitely the better (non-road) racecar. That's just a fact. |

Ford used the 6R80 in trucks and SUVs before the Mustang, so most of the teething issues have been eliminated at this point. Quote:

the fact of the matter is that while the mustangs will be faster stock for stock (for their weight), they will never, ever, EVER, be as reliable as the camaro. Chevrolet announced the 5th Gen years ago, Ford felt they had to rush to make sure their new 2011 could compete with it. Less R&D than was needed has left the Mustang unreliable for owners. I know this for a fact. My friend has always been able to beat out my 11 2SS with his 11 GT/CS and his car runs naturally too lean for its own mechanics. He lost cylinder number 8, as many other Mustang drivers have posted, and they replaced the entire half of his engine under warranty. The knock timing is bad, live axle, etc. are all points against the car.
The Mustang was always one of my favorite cars, but Ford's dropping the ball on their construction of their "masterpiece" turns me off to the brand. So go ahead, continue running better quarter miles...cause I would rather stick with the car that I can give to my son one day instead of junking, even if it can't beat a 5.0 Mustang.
