Yes I know it's not a Camaro question but I know several of you guys restore cars, especially you Pumpkin, so can you or anyone else help?
Where did you look on the firewall? Are you referring to the stampings on the cowl and by the heater, because the numbers on the cowltag do not count.

As long as the one in the window and the title match thats all that matters. As Rob said the cowl tag and stampings dont count. Those are body numbers and engine numbers. What year is your NOVA. As always I am looking for more cars.

hmmm...the cowl and heater stampings' digits should line up with the last digits (sequence number) of the VIN number, so if the heater and cowl stampings match each other, but the VIN tag is completely different, then it sounds like it's been re-bodied. Might have to take off the dash and see how the VIN tag is riveted on. Should be 6 sided rosette rivets, not hardware store rivets.

I just said the cowl tag numbers won't match because they have no direct correlation to the VIN. The cowl tag is just used to identify the car's options and it provides the sequence number when it was built at the plant, ( and with that number and a bit of research you can validate to see if the VIN number of a car is in a valid range that corresponds to the factory sequences ...but that's only worth the effort for high-end or rare cars). The stampings still count, as it pertains to numbers-matching vehicles and to see if a car's been re-bodied. Mopars do the same thing on the radiator support and cowl. It's a lot easier to swap VIN's than re-weld body stamping numbers....but the FBI frowns upon that. Just ask the currently jailed owners of Unique Performance.

Its kinda tough to re-vin a Nova. Not impossible thought. That part of the dash is welded in.

If you are talking about hidden vins, they absolutely need to match. Not sure if stampings tom is talking about are vins. Not sure where they hide it on a Nova, however depending on age it wont be in very many places.
