I read the service bulletin, and it also mentions what is known as piston slap. The LS series of engines also have that issue. The LS1 My '02 Vette was terrible, even though there was supposed to be a coating in the pistons added that year to reduce it. It sounds similar to the noise in your video, but it's hard to remember the exact sound I heard in my engine.

Last night I was going to go to the dealer and camp out there'to show them the cold start issue. It was not nearly as bad, and most of seems to have gone away for now since I got an oil change with only 400 something miles on the car. But this doesn't mean the problem is fixed. By the way I read somewhere on the internet that GM know about his problem and is working on lifters that don't bleed down so fast. I don't know how true it is.

wonder if the a6 taps more or less than m6 because of the dod lifter difference ?

I looked into this a while ago when the cars were first coming out (
use search). A PT Engineer told me the L99 uses unique lifters for the AFM and these lifters take a few seconds to reach normal oil and pressure and the L99 will tic. He assured me it would not damage anything. Now if the ticking isn't from the lifter ( others have provided the possible causes) or continues for more than a few seconds on a cold start then this explanation may not apply Hope that helps

The oil change seemed to have cured the car.. I hope it stays cured. I'm thinking engine break in particles go caught up into something. Who knows.

First start of the day mine does too. I think oil had something to do with it maybe, but the hi-pro roller-rockers are noisey anyway

My L99 almost never ticks when I start it. (It has happened a few times). But... I always let my car warm up in the morning for about one minute and sometimes more before I put it into reverse and back out of my driveway.
Pretty much like clockwork, when I drive very slowly down my street in first gear, I hear a tic-tic-tic-clank and then sometimes a sort of hesitation before the trans shifts into second. Sounds like metal making noise under the middle to rear part of the car. I have a Corsa catback and Halltech Yellowjacket on the car. When I start it the car actually sounds like it has a modified cam and the car idles pretty fast and hard. I love that sound. American muscle. Of course within a couple of minutes the idle calms down and just purrs more mild and normal. But at least it sounds pretty bad ass for a couple of minutes in the morning. On a different note, when I go over certain small bumps or depressions in the road while driving between 20 and 50 mph, my car makes a loud "ding" sound under the center to rear portion of the underside of the car. I used my OnStar system to have them run a comprehensive diagnostic on my car and they said everything looked good. But when they did a little research, they said that Camaro's built before 9-15-09 have loose and clanking sounding metal under the car when the car is cold and the problem or sounds go away as the car or weather warms up. My car seems to have that problem and it was built in Jan/2010. So we can't figure out what the problem with my car is. I really only care about the sound my car makes (the clank) when I go over certain bumps and depressions. Unlike many other Camaro owners, my clank sound is not coming from the front of my car and it doesn't usually happen when I'm turning, unless the turn includes some form of the bumps of depressions in the road that normally makes my car clank. And my car does not clank over every bump, just certain ones. I took it to the dealer and they said they couldn't replicate the noise. When I have time, I will take them to certain parts of the local roads where the clank sound is made so they can see. I'll report back in due time when I learn more. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |
