Walked into a GM dealership asked the workers at the parts department for a camaro locking gas cap and this is what I got - if you look at post 49 you'll see all the data tags that came with the cap, take that info to the dealership and I'm sure they won't have trouble finding the part

The key code should have 8 positions. The glove box lock cylinder only uses 4 cut positions - positions 5 - 8 in the cut sequence. That lock cylinder for the gas cap in your pic also looks like it is only 4. So you will be using positions 5 - 8 in the code, 5 being closest to the head of the cylinder (key hole end). There are Right and Left tumblers to be loaded on each side of the cylinder, left codes on one side right on the other.

That looks so close to the glove box lock cylinder, one thing that may help you is to take out the glove box cylinder and carefully take out the tumblers and springs to see what order they are in that cylinder. Then duplicate that order of tumblers in your new gas cap cylinder.

Once you know the key code, a good parts department should be able to code that cylinder in < 5 minutes. Shouldn't even have to assign it to a technician. $50 would be criminal theft. Or DIY it for free.

If you can dissassemble your glove box lock for comparison, may not even need your key code.
I'd gladly pay the $50. You lost me after the first sentence. What are you a safe cracker?

What is the point of leaving your car running? It literally will just be burning gas while you fill up...granted not a huge amount of gas but it's a waste in my opinion.

So I called a few locksmiths and they gave me the same price... about 50 bucks, so I said screw it, I'll take it to the dealership. I walked into the parts department ready to pay up but the guy that I talk to all the time and buy parts from said screw paying the 50 bucks to the service guys I know how to do it and I'll do it for free...I said awesome!! I ran grab the cap and he did it right in front of me in about 5 minutes.

That's not a locking gas cap. It's the standard cap. I found this number as well when searching. The "coded" locking gas cap is not online yet, you must go to a chevy dealership.

Damn this makes up my mind, I'm doing the coding myself! Unless someone at a GM dealership wants to do it for me for free like you lucked out on!

Yea he made it look so easy, didn't use the key code or the instructions just was sliding the tumblers in till they fit... It blew my mind I spent so long trying to figure it out and he did it in minutes - it has something to do with knowing which ones are left and right then just fitting them in

The very first photo in this thread shows that the coded locking cap has a tether like the stock gas cap. The Stant locking caps don't have that. An additional reason why I want one of these.

I'd like the tether as well

Lol I cut the tether off as soon as I installed it I hate that thing, once you unlock the cap the key can't be taken out until you lock it again so no worry about leaving the cap.
