It gets used on several road trips trips throughout the year that are quite lengthy, and I have a 85 mile commute to work so it gets used every so often for that as well. No hard at all.

Exactly - especially when it's driven by the OLM. If it hit 20-30% in 3-5k miles is happily change it, but it doesn't.

I change it when the oil life gets to 20-30%. It's a weekend car that doesn't get drive hard. With a synthetic oil, 10k isn't excessive at all.

If the oil was supposed to be changes at 3-5k...

I guess it's better for this oil to be in the can vs being burned but it's scary that so much has accumulated. Last time I emptied it was when I changed my oil, which was around 10k miles ago.
