Corvette and Camaro accounted for one in three sports car sales in 2011

DETROIT – Chevrolet is America’s favorite performance brand, with Camaro and Corvette accounting for one out of every three sports cars sold in the United States in 2011.

In 2011, Chevrolet accounted for 37 percent of the sports-car segment with the sale of 88,249 Camaros, surpassing its nearest competitor, the Ford Mustang, by more than 18,000 units. That lead is expected to increase when the new Camaro ZL1 goes on sale this month.
Chevrolet accounted for 27 percent of the luxury-sports-car segment in 2011, with a total of 13,164 Corvettes sold. Corvette – currently the only domestic car in the segment – more than doubled the sales of its nearest competitor, the Porsche 911. Continued HERE…

Chevrolet COPO Camaro Goes From Concept to Production

Stock Eliminator drag racer the quickest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet

DETROIT – Chevrolet will build 69 COPO Camaros for 2012, the brand’s first purpose-built Camaro drag-racing specialty car designed to compete with the quickest in NHRA’s Stock Eliminator and Super Stock classes. National records for quarter-mile times in these contests are in the nine-second range.

As such, the COPO Camaros are expected to be the quickest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet.

“The COPO Camaro is going to shake up the sportsman drag racing ranks this summer and give Chevy fans a great new reason to cheer on the Bowtie,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles & Motorsports. “COPO builds off the strengths that have made the Camaro the best-selling sports car in America. And while it was developed strictly for the drag strip, the COPO Camaro is infused with the same performance pedigree that every Camaro shares.”

The 69-car production for the 2012 COPO Camaro matches the number of “ZL-1” COPO Camaros made in 1969. COPO stands for Central Office Production Order and was Chevrolet’s special-order system in used by dealers to build high-performance models in the 1960s… More info INSIDE.

Oh noes!!! Aaron Gold, a producer on Top Gear USA, met with some misfortune in the rain at the Virginia International Raceway ZL1 media event while piloting the ZL1. Thankfully, according to GM, the damage is just cosmetic.

Chevy is currently holding a Camaro ZL1 media event at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR) and to mark the occassion Chevy has released this video of the Camaro ZL1 lapping the VIR in just 2:52:38!

To give you some perspective of how fast this laptime is – it’s faster than a Corvette Z06, Nissan GT-R, Lamborghini Mucielago LP670-4, Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Porsche 311 GT3 RS. How’s that for fast!

Is the Camaro Dusk Edition coming to market?! It’s possible that a production Camaro based on the Camaro Dusk concept which was introduced at the 2009 SEMA Show is finally to see production.

The clues? How about “Dusk Edition” parts appearing in the parts system. There are already part numbers for foglight bezels and driver and passenger seat backs and cushions, rear seat, and shifter boot.

We are happy to announce the Camaro5 Fest III Host Hotel and Overflow Hotel information!

The Wyndham Indianapolis West will be this year’s Camaro5 Fest (event info/details). The hotel is located close to the Indianapolis International Airport and just little over 10 miles away from Lucas Oil Raceway, the site of our third Fest.

Traditionally, the host hotel has been the site of many fun-filled evenings among enthusiasts and friends. It will also host the Meet & Greet, as well as being the starting point for the planned Camaro cruise.

When the new 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 arrives this spring, performance car enthusiasts will experience the hands-on driving satisfaction of a “stick” with the ease of an automatic transmission due to General Motors’ newly improved TapShift technology.

Since its introduction several years ago, TapShift has allowed drivers to control up- and down-shifts with paddle shifters. For 2012, GM powertrain engineers implemented a patent-pending software algorithm that improves tap response time by up to 60 percent compared to the previous system. No hardware changes were required for the upgrade.

“The faster you can get to the next gear, the better, and from the sound of it, the ZL1 automatic’s performance is going to make paddle shifting more exhilarating and satisfying for drivers of all skill sets,” said Eric Fedewa , director of Global Powertrain Forecasting at IHS Automotive. “We’re seeing a trend toward more manual-mode-capable, fun-to-drive automatic transmissions across all vehicle segments, and GM’s technology is leading the pack.”

The 2012 ZL1’s six-speed automatic transmission delivers a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds – a tenth of a second faster than the manual transmission time. Continued HERE…
